Iban or Dayak peoples
Borneo Indonesia / Sarawak, Malaysia
Grass fibers and cotton.
3.75 inches wide X 1.25 inches tall. 1.1 oz.
Good condition. One side of the inner lip is slightly crushed but lid sits flat. Red pigments stain the inside cover and vessel. 2 areas of the tassels are missing but 5 remain intact
Very old and fine lidded grass basket. The top and bottom are coiled and woven in the same technique and then is sealed with what seems like a light wax. Where both lips meet is embroidered with black and red cotton thread making a secure seal. Its further decorated with 7 sets of cotton string with homespun red, tan and black cloth forming the tassel ends. 3 of the sets are missing.
Very rare basket. More than likely stored something for ritual use. The British Museum lists a similar basket as being a “shaman’s charm” basket. More research is needed.
