This was originally a tubular sarong called tais feto and is worn for ceremonies and special occasions. The shorter less ornate sarong is called hermetan is for everyday or can be worn as an under garment to the fancier tais feto. In the past this would be a woman’s only garment but now it’s usually worn with a blouse kebaya and a shoulder cloth called selendang. As with the man’s the design usually shows where the weaver was from.
It consists of 4 woven panels of heavy cotton joined together and the maker used a mixture of chemical and natural dyes. The main motif along the upper and lower panels is a stylized depiction of a crocodile usually associated with the village of Nasi in the Amanatun area.
