Description

Tall, openwork, cane bamboo burden basket w/wooden rim, possibly Borneo or Sumba, Indonesia
Ib5
Dayak or Tau Humb peoples (?)
Borneo or Sumba Indonesia.
Split bamboo, wood, metal rivets and nails.
14.5 inches wide 29.5 inches tall. 8.25 inches across at the base. 2.12 lbs.
Very good condition.
A very strong elegant useful basket. The openwork lets the contents aerate while working in the hot sun. Reinforced inside and out with wooden legs attached to a 2-inch-wide bent wood rim, secured by 2 chrome tacks and nails along the legs. The square wooden base lets it sit level and sturdy despite its height. All loops are intact where the vine or cord would pass through and wrapper around the owner’s forehead. The wooden parts are carefully painted with a brick/brown pigment suggesting it was done before assembled.
It was purchased in Bali, Indo., in 1996. We were told it was from Sumba. Similar baskets found attribute them to Borneo.
