Man’s lower body wrapper or shoulder blankets are called selimut or mau naek. They are usually worn as sarong style with the ends making a large fold of knot in the front to show the design and volume. A second one might be worn backpack style across the shoulders so the design is centered on the back. The ends are then gathered around the waist and secured with a cloth belt. The volume and design of the cloth show status within the wear’s community.
This piece is made up of 2 panels then sewn together. It has a full ikat center with thin strips of blue, pink, red and white border. The central motif is made of natural dyes of brown and orange, while the borders are chemical. The center hook and rhomb design is called kaif and is to believe it originated from the Dongson people who were of Tai stock coming from mainland se Asia from 500-100 BC. This could have been woven in the Nule area of Amanuban Barat due to the use of this design.
