The Dong or Kam people live in southwest China in the providence(s) of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi.
They hold elaborate festivals throughout the year in which thousands of people come from the neighboring villages. Both men and woman dress up in exquisite colorful customs which the women make themselves. Pieces like this are created by a master embroiderer to be sold to a woman who doesn’t sew herself. This is a common practice now that the younger generations are taking jobs in the cities. They are applied onto the main body of a garment to create a beautiful ensemble. This piece is just one of many that would have been applied to make up the full dress.
