Zantu Tribe Woman’s Tunic

$1,400.00

This long rectangular tunic is made by the Zantu people of Burma (Myanmar) who live in the Ann Pass area deep inside the Chin hills and are a part of the larger Chin group. As with most Chin groups they weave elaborate costumes using a simple backstrap loom. Local cotton with Chinese silk makes up the design. The center of the tunic is embellished with tiny white seed beads in a zigzag line and double rows, metal sequins, delicately embroidered designs, and an additional supplementary weaving pattern. Collected in Burma 1998.

Long rectangular tunic. The black ground cloth of the upper half of this garment is decorated with three sets of supplementary weaving patterns in magenta and tan. These design elements are symmetrically placed bordering the center. The center of the tunic is further embellished with tiny white seed beads in a zigzag line and double rows, metal sequins, delicately embroidered designs, and an additional supplementary weaving pattern. The lower half of the garment features richly woven supplementary chevron and diamond patterns in magenta and pink thread and is the decorative focus of the piece. Additional metal sequins are distributed throughout. A supplementary row of anthropomorphic figures located above the woven lower half, sets this tunic apart from others we have collected. Tiny white seed beads accentuate the hem.
