Woman’s sarong or body wrap, tais feto (Tetum)
Cotton
60 in X 22 in tube shape.
Good condition. Some fraying along the seam due to wear.

This is a beautiful example of a woman’s tubular sarong called tais feto and is worn for ceremonies and special occasions. The shorter less ornate sarong is called hermetan is for everyday or can be worn as an under garment to the fancier tais feto. In the past this would be a woman’s only garment but now it’s usually worn with a blouse kebaya and a shoulder cloth called selendang. As with the man’s the design usually shows where the weaver was from.
It consists of 2 identical woven panels of heavy cotton joined together in the center and then sewn up the edge to create the tube form. The cotton is heavy homespun cotton and the maker used natural dyes.
3 rows of buna weaving (a discontinuous supplementary weave) with a water bug pattern decorate the upper and lower borders.
