Charm box that carries religious images or prayers, gau
Silver, copper, coral and leather.
2.25 inches across X 2.75 inches top to bottom X 1.5 inches from back to front
Good. The silver loops that a strap passes through has been worn down from use as well. Backside has a crack with native repair. Small pin holes due to wear.
Boxes like these are worn both by Tibetans and Bhutanese. They are worn around the neck and would contain small scared objects including Buddha images and prayers. The silver front slides over the copper back and is secured by a leather strap. Beautiful reposee work decorates the silver front with a coral bead set in the center. The leather tab is in place at the top but is missing at the bottom. It has a lovely patina from years of handling and use.
Displayed during exhibition Bhutanese Textiles; Weaving from the Heart, Asian Cultural Center of Vermont, Brattleboro, VT, 2007.
