Tamang Shaman’s Ritual Drum, Nepal

Made of heavy 1/2 inch piece of wood painstakingly bent to form a tight circle and securely held in place with two 1/2 inch wide hand forged iron staples. Leather hide is stretched across the face of the drum and another 1/2 inch wide iron strapping slipped over that to secure it in place. Rattan or bamboo are used to tighten the head that delivers a rich deep tone when struck.

The Tamang are a hardy stock of people living in the lower to central foothills of the Himalayan mountains in the Kingdom of Nepal. Having Animist belief system, they feel everything living and non-living have a spirit. When a person becomes ill, they call in the local healer or shaman. The healer will perform rituals to drive the malevolent spirit from the patient’s body. Drums like this as well as other paraphernalia are used during this ritual.
