The Iban peoples are a part of the Dayak tribe of Borneo. They live in the States of West Kalimantan Indonesia as well in Sarawak Malaysia and can also be found in Brunei. Traditionally Iban would have several ceremonies throughout the year and baskets like this one would contain important objects or textiles, or be used as a vehicle when presenting offering to the gods.
A V shape doubled wall basket with reinforcements of rattan woven around the body and secured at the base. Bent wood and bamboo are used to create the structure. Finley split bamboo of dark and light brown make up the palate of classic Iban motifs and designs, humanoids forms, interlocking hooks, triangles. Further embellishment comes with wrapping of silver and gold foil anchored with split bamboo spaced evenly around the lip and down the legs. The base has the remnants of finely formed triangles of gold and silver foil wrapping around 3 sides pinned down with crisscross stitches of bamboo giving it an interlocking triangle effect.
The care and execution of the decorations suggest ritual use. CIRCA mid to early 20th century.
