Antique Leather Covered and Lacquered Chinese Opium Pillow on Bamboo Frame

This so called “opium pillow” has a slotted split bamboo frame to give it strength and flexibility. Then covered with leather and pained with lacquered red that’s been burnished to a high gloss by the maker or from natural use. The ends are capped with additional leather pained red and black for the base and two floral scenes cover both sides. A great old artifact from a time long ago.

The ends are capped with additional leather pained red and black for the base and two floral scenes cover both sides. A great old artifact from a time long ago. It could be Chinese or Japanese due to originated from the Ryukyu islands currently owned by Japan but has been owned by Japan and China on and off over the years.
