Bhutanese Silver Dress Fastener and Necklace.

Various forms of dress fasteners, called coma, are used in Bhutan to secure a woman’s outfit. This is one of the most elaborate of the class called jabtha comas due to it dualling as a necklace. Made of hand-crafted coin silver along with old silver coins from Bhutan. Displayed during exhibition Bhutanese Textiles; Weaving from the Heart.

Very good, middle pendent missing its setting.

This elaborate dress fastener and decorative accessory is referred to as coma in Bhutan. It is used to join two corners of the large rectangular dress, kira, at each shoulder for wearing. The example shown here would have belonged to an aristocratic woman due to its complex design and the chain of old coins. The coins display the visage of His Majesty Jigme Wangchuk second King of Bhutan (August 21, 1926 – March 30, 1952). He is shown wearing the Raven Crown, symbol of his monarchy.
