oasbh001 Drukpa Bhutan Arrow quiver Rattan, leather, lacquered cloth 37 in. long, bulbous end 14 in. in circumference, 4.75 in. across. The cap is 5.25 in. across & 5 in. tall. Bottom 2.25 in across Good.Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and stems from ancient times when rival dzongs were defended by skilled archers. This handsome quiver is seldom seen in the West. It is made of sturdy, woven, rattan featuring geometric designs in red and black on richly patinated natural brown. The bulbous form at the top would provide ample room for feathered arrow ends. It is surmounted by a removable hard leather cap. The bulb shape itself has been wrapped in a cotton gauze similar to a monk’s robe and coated in a black lac or shellac. A beautifully patinated leather grip is sewn directly below the bulbous shape and on the end of the quiver. A beautiful ethnographic specimen from a little traveled part of the world. |
