Man's lower body garment, "lun-taya Kyoe-gyi-geik, taung-shey, pah soe"
Silk
44 in. x 158½ in.
Very Good
$37,000.
This rare textile is an excellent example of a complete nobleman's lower body garment. All of the dress of the Burmese court is hard to find today, with the full "taung -shey pahsoe" being the most elusive. The fineness of the interlocking tapestry weave contributes elegance to the simplicity of alternating stripes and the somber palette of deep plum and pale ecru. The dominant pattern correlates to a design documented as being from Ava, circa 1850, in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection, London (#0488/3693).
