Ceremonial skirt
Raffia palm fiber

$3800.
Rectangular form consisting of alternating red and tan raffia panels sewn along selvedges and embellished with cowrie shells and cut pile work. This type of royal overskirt is reserved for the most elite women of the court. The use of cowrie shells reflects luxury and wealth as well as adding visual drama. The cut pile work in alternating triangles references the barkcloth patchwork stripes and animal pelts that adorned the most elaborate examples of earlier times. The bands of small black and tan checkered patchwork that form the borders and the tiny raffia pompoms along the edge further testify to the royal status of the wearer.
