bb2 Drukpa Bhutan Travelers Bag or Mail Bag Heavy Yak leather, thick leather cording, metal grommets Large bag: 12in. x 6 in. X 14 in. Fair. The leather is old and cracked. Well traveled bag $225. We were told by our Bhutanese merchant whom we purchased this bag from it was used as a mail pouch for delivering letters in Bhutan. It was strapped to a pack animal when on the move secured by the 2 straps on the back. It's made with heavy Yak leather, with metal eyelets that the cording passes through to secure it when traveling. Swirling cloud designs are appliqued onto each lower corner of the front as well as dance around the edges of the top cover. The Chinese symbol of good luck is applied to the central front and symbol found often throughout the Himalayas, Tibet and western China decorates the top lid. A very old and interesting piece. Displayed during the exhibition Bhutanese Textiles; Weaving from the Heart, Bank of Thailand Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 2008-09. |
