Rabari (?)
Kutch, Gujarat, India
Torque necklace
Silver
6½ in. across, 7 in. from back to front
Very good
$900.
Classic heavy torque necklace worn by men and women of several tribal groups including the Rabari. The design of this piece is formed by tightly coiled silver wire which is stuffed with white cotton or wool for extra support. Two insets of undulating wire beads accent the sides of the necklace and the large engraved and repousse disk serves as the visual focal point. A heavy silver screw positioned on the left allows the neck support to be opened and closed for wearing.
